ADHD Medication & Shared Care
Before Starting Private ADHD Medication
Important information about ADHD medication, titration, monitoring and shared care
Discuss Shared Care With Your GP
Before starting private ADHD medication, we recommend discussing future prescribing arrangements with your GP. Once medication has been successfully titrated and the dose is stable, shared care may be requested from your GP. Shared care is not guaranteed and your GP may decide not to accept the arrangement.
If Shared Care Is Not Accepted
If shared care is not accepted, we will discuss the available options with you. Where clinically appropriate, this may include continuing private prescribing, medication reviews and monitoring.
Before treatment is initiated, we will make sure you understand that you may remain responsible for the costs of private prescriptions, medication, reviews and monitoring if shared care is not agreed.
Before Medication Is Started
Medication will only be initiated following an appropriate clinical assessment. We may request relevant information from your GP or other healthcare professionals to support safe prescribing and treatment planning.
Complex or Specialist Care
Every referral is considered individually. Adults, children and young people with complex mental health, neurodevelopmental or physical health needs may require additional assessment, closer monitoring, or involvement of another appropriate specialist service.
Please tell us if you or your child are currently receiving care from a GP, CAMHS, paediatric service, adult mental health service or another specialist team.
Medication Monitoring
ADHD medication requires appropriate monitoring of treatment response, side effects and relevant physical health measures. The frequency and type of monitoring will depend on the medication, age, clinical circumstances and individual needs.
Medication Safety
Do not start, stop, restart, change the dose of or transfer ADHD medication based on information on this website. Medication decisions require an individual clinical assessment and appropriate clinical review.
Our clinical practice is informed by relevant evidence-based and medicines guidance, including NICE guidance, the BNF/BNFC and relevant medicine product information.
